Average Weight Gain During Pregnancy

Many women will obsess about their body size, and despite how badly that attitude might affect them when they become pregnant, the attitudes will still continue. As a whole, society has a fear of becoming fat, even when pregnant. But it is important to attain and maintain healthy weight gain in the pregnancy because it greatly affects the outcome of the pregnancy. Under no circumstances should a woman cut back on her nutrition, since it would negatively affect her health and that of her baby.

Average Weight Gain During Pregnancy

There is some confusion among women about what the average weight gain during pregnancy should be. The recommended weight gain is a different amount for different women. Because a woman is pregnant, does not mean that she must constantly gorge herself in order to properly support her pregnancy.

Malformations in the fetus may happen if a woman does not gain an adequate amount of weight during her pregnancy. If a woman is not properly nourished during her pregnancy, it will be difficult for her baby to have the proper nutrients for healthy and good growth. The baby will heavily depend on your resources and could lead to deficiencies.

However, diabetes and labor difficulties may result, should there be excess weight gain in the pregnancy. It has also been shown that when more than an average weight gain is put on by a pregnant woman, she is more than likely to develop obesity after she delivers.

The average weight increases recommended by doctors does vary from one country to another. Usually the suggestion is about 2.2 pounds each month, leading to total gain of about 9 to 10 pounds for the entire pregnancy. But it is always best to first consult with your doctor, to determine the best course of action for you to follow.

The myth of "eating for two" during a pregnancy, is just that, a myth. There is no truth to that saying. A good rule of thumb to follow is to consume an extra 300 calories extra, each day of your pregnancy, to be able to provide for your needs and that of your growing baby. In this way, you will not experience any problems maintaining a healthy average gain during the term of your pregnancy.
